This sounds like a species of the Scolidae family of wasps.
Try looking them up in an insect guide and see if any pictures look similar. If these wasps are Scolids they are not very aggressive. They are solitary hunting wasps and take lots of provacation to sting but they can pack a whallop! Scolids are nothing to be concerned about. If you can post a picture I would be better able to identify your wasp. Hope this helps.
