cicada killer question

For three years I have tried to catch myself a cicada killer. We have them up here in Ontario, Canada but I can't find them. I know where they are thanks to several sources but I can't find them in these areas. I look for them in sandy areas bordering carolinian forest but to no avail. Can anyone tell me what habitat I should try to catch one of these wasps in. Take into account I'm trying to catch one so tree tops are probably out of the question and please be as detailed as possible. Thanks.
