:Yesterday I saw a 2+" long flying insect while cutting my grass in Southern Indiana. It was a hornet or wasp of some sort. It had a long tail that was black and white stripped, and a red body. PLEASE HELP.

You might want to look at this website, even if the coloring isn't the same it may be what you have. http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2078A.html Otherwise try a search on the Giant Japanese Hornet and see if that better fits your description.
