Giant Hornet?

Yesterday my husband saw something we cannot identify. He says it was close to 2 inches long, yellow and black but no stripes. The body was more flat than round and it few and hovered like a wasp or a hornet. We live in middle Tennessee, and have several species of wasps and hornets but we have never seen anything like this. It was very large.
