Tarantula Venom Glands

A friend of mine swears that they used to have a tarantula that had had it's venom glands removed. Is there any chance at all that this could be true?

Also, I am a newbie to spiders and trying to get over my phobia. As such, I have purchased a pink toe and set up a terrarium for it. It seems really jumpy - and so am I. Is it very likely at all that this type of spider will bite me? I was able to hold it ok at the reptile show - partially because someone else did first, and once right when I got home. Then someone slammed the door and it jumped and scurried. Since then it tends to scurry away when I try to pick it up (which normally scares me). It isn't raising it's front legs or anything, but I just would like some confirmation that if I do finally get it to scurry onto my hand it isn't going to nail me.

Thanks,
Shane
