It has been a long, long time since I used to use a kill jar. What I used then was actually a tin, much like you often find cookies or candy sold in. I put in this a screen, slightly larger than the can and with the edges bent in, which held it slightly off the bottom of the can. I put a layer of cotton batting between this screen and the bottom of the can.

All I did to get it ready was pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol on the batting. This killed butterflies and moths quickly and effectively for me. The alcohol does not stain and any surplus evaporates quickly, preventing your specimens from getting wet in the first place.
