Possibly some sort of fly landed on your thumb and laid it's eggs (which would have turned into maggots!!) in your cut/scar tissue. Be glad you got them out, although all North American flies (I think...) have maggots that eat dead flesh, there are some South American species that eat living flesh. Hope it doesn't happen again! Keep all open wounds/sores/cuts covered by some sort of bandage and clean at all times.
