It is July 4th and around 1:30 am my daughter and I went outside to look at the garden. We noticed a huge lime green moth fluttering around our garage light. We came inside and searched on the computer to see what it was (that is how we ended up here) and we think what you saw was a luna moth. Apparently they are common in the south and not so common in Indiana. We brought him (it was a male) inside and studied him for a while (very beautiful) and then let him go as we felt it would be unfair to imprison him for any length of time because they only live for one week. We think this is what you saw.
