You probably can't see it in the picture, but I have punched holes with a paper-punch along the bottom of the soda bottle. So far, neither the mantids nor the flies have escaped, probably because they tend to travel upwards, and the holes are down low. I also try to remove the dome every day or so to remove any dead, uneaten flies and other debris that might attract ants, and at that time I mist the mantis and plant lightly with a spray bottle. Once the mantids get a little bigger and have bigger flies to eat, I can put a bit of screening where the bottle cap is now. Right now the tiny flies would escape right through it.
