ok let me get something clear, cicadas arent in the fly family
they undergo incomplete metamorphisis and have a nymph period when immature, some species living underground from 17-20 years, coming up to molt, mate as adults, and live out the rest of their brief period as adults, and finally drop dead of old age. they have no grub stage as someone said in this forum! and fireflies should be posted in the beetle forum! fireflies are soft-shelled beetles that use their light patterns to attract mates. it is not wise to catch adults, as they die very very easily. catch only their larval form, which is predatory often called glowworms. they posses the same ability to generate light from an unkown process. they pupate and become adults and fly through the summer sky
to find a mate. the females and males have different light patterns. i dont think you can buy them anywhere... i often find them here in CA and they are very cool
