Hi, I teach gifted and talented middle school kids. We grow mealworms for our Anole lizards. This is how I do it.
First, I go to a petstore and buy the smallest mealworms they have. One tub will do you (approx. 50 worms). They are refrigerated to make them hybernate. Anyway. Put them in a plastic shoe box (no lid). Pour in the tub with the worms and all the "Meal" that they are living in. Next add lots of oatmeal and gently stir. They also like thin slices of apples. Don't cut apples too thick or they burrow in and you can't get them out! Put them in a dry, darkish place.
Within a day you will see many "skins" where they have shed.Within a week they pupate or turn into these alien little things with no legs and bulging eyes. Next you will have black beetles. They do not crawl out of the box. They lay eggs and it all starts over again. I know a teacher who has a unit on mealworms. If you email me, I'll tell you more. Have a happy day! CB
