:re superworms the ones that are injected with hormones. Some say that superworms will change into beetles if kept alone in little film canisters. Others say they won't change.
:Do any of you have experience with superworm breeding?
The giant mealworms Tenebrio molitor--(not Zophobus) are sprayed with a chemical that prevents molting or pupation. This chemical is known as Ecdysone.
Zophobus morio(Super/King Mealworms) will pupate if the larvae is 1.Large enough & done with molting & 2. Kept in a solitary state away from other larvae.
I've bred Zophobus for 3 generations. They are kept at room temp.; however high 70's to mid 80's is ideal. Substrate: rabbit pellets, oatmeal(old fashioned style), wheatbran, cornmeal--->(80%), dog/cat chow(20%). On top of this, I have torn-up egg crating/brown paper bags- layered on top of each other. I will throw in scrap vegetables(carrots, potatoes, greens, apples) for water or I spray the egg crating & sides of the bin with water once a day. Water that is sprayed should be kept to a minimum due to any hitting the grain products will promote mold/fungus. The larvae seek out crevices/folds when ready to pupate. I believe that in nature, they live in rotting logs/vegetation.
