how do i breed earthworms?

i am trying to start a wormery because i have three box turtles. i keep the worms in a container with soil, decaying matter, peat moss, ect, and i keep them covered with a cloth because i know they don't like light. But i'm not getting any worms! Should i just wait or is there anything i'm doing wrong??
