Ok basically the answer is it depends on the butterfly and conditions. Like most butterflies live for 1-2 weeks or so. If you know what the caterpilliar is (like what type it is) then search for it's host plant and that is what the caterpilliar eats. Cost wise.... it shouldn't cost a thing unless buying from breeders and getting plants. But if you have a black swallowtail caterpilliar then it eats dill and parsley....
