What is that thing??

My boys found a beautiful HUGH beetle, but I can't identify it. It is about 3" long and doesn't seem to fly. It has things coming out over and under its mouth... like the rhino beetles… but is beautifully colored, shiny gold, tan & black. How can I find out what this thing is and if it is safe for the kids and the beetle to keep him?
