Formica Queens?

I am wondering what red/wood ant "formica ssp" queens look like. I just looked at a nest and found the smaller workers, some massive ones, and one even bigger one with wings. What are the BIG ones and the big ones with wings, my guess is male, and queen but i have no idea. Also where can i easily find queens of this genus?
